Welcome to the Special Education Association's on-line Bookclub!

We are the Special Education Association of British Columbia.  One of our mandates is to provide professional learning opportunities for our members.

Inclusion of all students is the philosophy of public education in British Columbia.  The trend of increasing diversity in BC's student population is fairly well documented.  Differentiated instruction is responsive instruction that allows each child to progress successfully from their current level of competency.  It requires getting to know the learner and what he/she needs to be successful.

The role of the Special Education teachers is to support successful inclusion.  Many of you are non-enrolling teachers who support classroom teachers in meeting the needs of all the learners in their classroom.

We are discussing

Start Where They Are:

Differentiating for Success with the Young Adolescent (with CD-ROM) (Paperback)

DON'T FORGET TO CHECK OUT THE SEA WIKI ON DI - LISTED ON THE SIDEBAR.  IT CONTAINS AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF USEFUL MATERIAL!

-There are 6 sessions to our book club.

-The sessions are numbered and can be accessed via the sidebar.

-Each session starts with a quick review of the topic and the time line.

-A discussion question or 2 is listed.

-Please respond to the questions, pose one of your own or make a comment.    Do this by typing in the comment boxes available at the bottom of each page.

-Every time you log on, you can scroll down and read other participants' comments and respond to them if you wish.

-If you wish to add links to relevant sites or information, you can add links directly on the page.  (If you have technical questions, I will do my best to respond to them or you can contact pbworks by clicking on the help link at the top of the page).

-At the end of 2 weeks, we will move on to the next session. Previous sessions will not be removed so you can continue to refer to them.

-If you have any comments/concerns about how the site is working, you can address it publicly on the site or privately to me at lauriecairns@shaw.ca.

Remember a book club is only as good as the conversation that it elicits! Welcome and enjoy!

I was at Karen Hume's workshop at the conference this year and am looking forward to reading her book and discussing her ideas. The workshop was terrific!

I am also looking forward to participating in this book club. Karen Hume's workshop was on my list as one of the ones that I would have liked to take but I made another choice. I am glad that we have the opportunity.

I just received my book and I will comment on the readings once I am done. My name is Shelly Carson and I am the Special Education/Learning Assistance Teacher at Edgehill Elementary School in Powell River. I want to learn more about how I can support my teachers in differentiated instruction for their classes. We are in the beginning stages of doing this in my school. Talk to you soon.

Hello:
my name is Shendah Benoit and I am a Consulting Resource Teacher at Okangan Falls Elementary. I will be participating from Summerland BC. Although I feel comfortable with the practise of differentiated instruction, I hope to gain more insight into current research so that I can share ideas with my colleagues. I will be incorporating a smart board into my instruction next year and am also eager to hear ideas for this. I am looking forward to our discussion.

Hi! my name is Laurie and I am facilitating this book club. I could swear that I had already entered my info but it seems to have disappeared. I teach .8 French Immersion gr.3,4 and have .2 administration as the school's VP. I spent 5 years as the learning support teacher in a dual track school and in that role got involved with the provincial SEA executive. i am now living differentiated instruction as I have 2 grades and the usual range of abilities within the grades. I am really good at some aspects of DI and pretty weak in others. I am looking forward to some good conversations.

Hi! My name is Joanne Gregory and I am an Integration Support/Literacy Support teacher at Crystal View Elementary in the Sooke School District. I have just completed an inquiry with 2 classroom teachers at my school at the grade 4 & 5 level - we explored how to differentiated a measurement unit in math. I had read Karen Hume's book and my Teacher's were already practicing some Assessment for Learning strategies so together we piggybacked off each other's ideas and came up with some great math surveys and pre/during/post assessments based on the PLOs. I'll try to tell you more as we proceed through these sessions. I am looking forward to the sharing of comments and questions. Thanks Laurie for setting this up!!
